Ride On
April 2019

This is a rearrangement of the track Ride On by AC/DC I that produced during my masters.

My goal was to capture the soulful performance of the original version but reimagined in a more contemporary genre.

Instrumentation

Synth Guitar: I synthesised the arpeggiating instrument that plays throughout (panned left) using Ableton's Tension in an attempt to create a guitar-like sound. While I think it works with the piece, it could have been improved by embracing the fact that it was synthesised and by exploring how it could 'evolve' throughout the piece, rather than focusing on creating a realistic guitar sound.

Bass: The bass sound was made up of a live bass guitar and a synth that I created in Ableton's Analog. I did this to give the bass a more interesting and contemporary sound.

Drums: I used this project as a chance to try out a drum recording method that I had heard about. The method involved recording the drums (kick, snare, toms) on their own for one take, and then recording the cymbals by themselves for another take; I had heard that this made mixing drums a lot easier, removing bleed and providing a cleaner sound. While this method did reduce the bleed, I think it negatively affected the drummer's performance as, even with practice, there were timing issues that had to be fixed during the mixing stage. In retrospect, greater care to the overhead mics' positions should have been given as the ride sounds slightly muffled during the choruses.

This track is the main theme/ level music for Blood Rush - A virtual reality, on-rails shooter video game.

My goal was to create a track that combined 80s Synthwave with video game music as this was what the game's visuals drew inspiration from.

At around 2:40, the track crossfades into an atmospheric soundscape. I designed this soundscape to sound like a seemingly abandoned space laboratory (the game's setting), and it plays while on the main menu.

This tracks plays during the tutorial level of Project ND - A retro, couch-co-op, bullet-hell video game.

The tutorial level is set in a military base and throws the players straight into the action, so my plan was for the music to reflect this while sticking to the Mega Drive/ GBA-sounding instrumentation used throughout the soundtrack.
